Blue Lagoon resort, Fiji
Blue Lagoon is on Nacula island, which is right at the top of the Yasawa Islands and the last stop on the boat that goes from Port Denarau in Nadi. It takes about five hours on the ferry, which sounds tiresome, but cruising around South Pacific islands really isn’t all that bad! 🙂
Arriving at Blue Lagoon was a jaw dropping moment – the sea was beyond turquoise and so, so clear with a long golden beach. There are palm trees and coconuts everywhere you look – it’s pure paradise! There are rooms for all different budgets from dorms to beachfront bures with your own sun-lounger on the beach. We were in a garden bure set back from the beach, but only by about 30 seconds! Once we were checked in it was straight to the beach bar for a cocktail under a palm tree on the beach. Lush!
There are lots of things to do at the resort with entertainment from the staff every evening. Sunday was movie night and Saturday was ‘party night’. But it’s not beer pong and dancing kind of partying… we’re talking limbo and running with a potato between your knees kind of partying! Utterly hilarious though, and we won a bottle of sparkling wine in the potato game!
In the day you can either chill out on the gorgeous beach or you can dive into the crystal clear water via the inflatable slide in the sea. The marine life here is amazing with a coral reef just off the beach and the dive shop has loads of dive sites on offer.
An absolute must from this resort is the trip to the Sawa-I-Lau caves. This is where Blue Lagoon was filmed, and although I haven’t seen the movie, it’s an amazing place! You descend stone steps into a cave that is almost circular, taller than it is wide, and opens out to the sky – like it’s been roughly hollowed out by a giant barrel! Once you’ve swam around this cave, you get taken by the guide into another cave, which is in complete darkness! You have to duck under the water for a few seconds to get under the wall to this cave, and then it’s just torchlight that shows you around. It’s pretty creepy but so cool! The trip will set you back about 80 FJD per person.
