Christmas & New Year in Sydney

If you’re planning on spending Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Sydney then there’s one thing you need to know about each… Christmas will be weird. And New Year will be incredible!

I kind of become Buddy the Elf at Christmas – I absolutely love it! So it was very strange being away from home, friends, family, cold weather and my beloved mulled wine. The Aussies do enjoy Christmas, but don’t seem to quite have the same love for it as us Brits. Maybe it’s because we need it to get through the winter, whereas for Australia it’s a nice addition to a glorious summer!

So when it came to Christmas Day, we did what everyone else seemed to be doing, and headed to Coogee beach with a coolbag of barbecue food and a Santa hat! It was crazy busy there as Sydney is so strict on drinking on all other beaches, but it was a good atmosphere and we had a great time drinking in the sunshine and having the odd dip in the sea. Apart from the section of the day when George went surfing on an inflatable pink sofa and dislocated his shoulder… classic! We had a great time but I’m still looking forward to spending future Christmasses in the traditional British way – by freezing my butt off! 🙂

New Year’s Eve on the other hand, well that’s another story.

It. Was. AMAZING!

We were lucky enough to have a place to watch the harbour fireworks from the Botanical Gardens so we had a perfect view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. We spent the evening having a few cups of fizz and nibbles while being entertained firstly by an acrobatic airplane, then the 9pm ‘warm up’ fireworks, and a boat procession.

And then, finally, it was time for the midnight countdown! The 12 minutes of fireworks flew by, with snippets of music from 2016’s lost legends, Bowie, Prince and Gene Wilder (Willy Wonka). It was just incredible and absolutely blew our minds! The fireworks seemed to being going off in every direction we looked – it was magical! I can’t recommend it enough, get yourself there for one New Year’s Eve of your life, and book a good spot in advance!
