Kangaroos & motorbikes with Scooter Roo – Agnes Water/ 1770

After a few busy days in Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands, we had just more than a week to kill until our booked Fraser Island trip from Rainbow Beach. So we decided to break it up with a few nights in Agnes Water/ 1770 and a few nights in Hervey Bay.

After a tiring overnight journey from Airlie Beach we arrived in the small town of Agnes Water. It’s definitely not a party town but there’s a nice beach and we had a really nice few days chilling out. Other than generally lazing around, the two highlights here were the Scooter Roo tour and visiting the Horizon kangaroo sanctuary.

Scooter Roo

This trip is essentially touring Agnes Water/1770 on a chopper style moped and spotting kangaroos. It’s pretty bizarre concept and I have to admit I was a bit sceptical at first, especially as it’s $85 each. But as so many people had recommended it we decided to give it a go!

We arrived at the centre and were kitted out with leather jackets and flame decorated helmets, while AC/DC blared out from the reception. I’d never ridden a motorbike/moped before so I was pretty excited! Before we were allowed to venture out we had to have a go on the test circuit and satisfy the guides that we could safely drive the choppers. It was a bit touch and go seeing as I crashed into George, but once I got to grips with the fact that the handle is an accelerator rather than a brake, it was all good. Haha! So then it was time to hit the road!

So badass!

There must’ve been about 30 of us and it was such a buzz with all of us riding along in a convoy. I think if you’re a regular biker you might find it a bit boring as we generally didn’t go much faster than 30mph. But for a first timer like me it was SO much fun, I loved it! I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face as we rode around the town, and it only got better when we got to the area where wild kangaroos hang out! We must’ve seen about 30-40 kangaroos and wallabies! It was so funny seeing them sit upright and curiously watch the noisy convoy go past and so amazing riding under through the Australian countryside under the big blue sky with kangaroos hopping along beside us!

The tour took us up to even smaller town of 1770 where you could buy potato wedges and/or an ice cream to enjoy as the sun set over the bay. We didn’t watch the whole sunset though as I think we needed to head back while it was still light. It was an amazing afternoon and I was well disappointed when we pulled back into the centre!

Horizon Kangaroo Sanctuary

You can get a trip up to this sanctuary through all the hostels in Agnes. We paid $18 each, including drop off and pick up. Horizon is a rescue centre for kangaroos, particularly baby ones, which they raise. It’s not fenced in, so the roos are free to come and go as they please, but there were a good 20-30 there when we went! Inside the house are the small baby ones, who were all sleeping in makeshift pouches while we were there.

But we had two hours to watch, feed and stroke the rest of the kangaroos and it was so lovely. Apparently evening time is their favourite time to play fight too, and a couple of them wanted to box with us, which was pretty hilarious! Click here to see George having his ass kicked! Definitely recommend going here if you’ve got an afternoon spare while you’re in Agnes.
