R&R restaurant & bar, Magnetic Island

We treated ourselves to a meal out at this restaurant for my birthday, and it was delicious!

Magnetic Island is quite small with a low population, so there wasn’t tonnes of choice and this was one of the closest to where we were staying at Xbase hostel. The restaurant is located just opposite the Picnic Bay bus stop, so it’s easy to get to.

The menu wasn’t especially cheap, but not especially expensive either, for Australia. I was lucky enough to have birthday money to splash out with, so we treated ourselves to three whole courses, and even a bottle of Prosecco! Flashpackers, I know! ;)

Having said that there were pretty reasonable options – e.g. the fisherman’s basket main course with prawns, calamari, scallops, fish and squid was $24. We both had seafood to start though – deliciously fresh and huge prawns (main pic) – so we went for the rib fillet steak for main course. The massive piece of beef was so tender and cooked perfectly, and it came with a big pile of veg and roasted, skin on potatoes. It was an enormous plate of food and neither of us could finish it! I also had the blue cheese sauce, which was deliciously salty and tangy.

Although I felt like I was going to burst after those two courses, you can’t have a birthday without birthday cake. So I ordered the chocolate cheesecake and the waiter was nice enough to find me a candle so I could blow it out haha 🙂 the cake was absolutely delicious, really silky and rich with a nutty base, but again I couldn’t finish it!

We had a really nice evening here – the food was so nice and it’s right on the sea front so, although it was dark, we could still hear the sea, which is always lovely! It was a one-off treat for us so we went all out, but you could definitely do it cheaper as the steak was one of the most expensive options.
