Accommodation review: Albergo Marechiaro, Rome

As with any capital city, Rome is expensive and it was tricky to find somewhere to stay that was affordable and in a good, central spot. To be fair we didn’t look at hostels as this was before our backpacking days and we wanted our own space for a coupley city break.

We went for Albergo Marechiaro hotel which at €89 (£70ish) per night was fairly reasonably priced considering it’s in such a handy and central location right next to the Termini train station. As it was so central so it was never too far to walk pretty much anywhere! It wasn’t the busiest area in terms of bars and nightlife, though, but this wasn’t a major issue as it wasn’t far to walk to other places.

The hotel itself seemed quite old – there was a very dodgy looking elevator that we weren’t brave enough to try! It was quite basic but it was clean with a decent shower and a comfortable enough bed so we were happy! There was also a warning on booking that said no entry to the hotel between 1am and 7am, but don’t let this put you off as if you just tell the hotel staff in advance that you’ll be out late they’re happy to sort you out.

You basically get what you pay for with this hotel – the location. But if, like us, you just need a base to explore the city from then it’s all good!
Just a warning to say that Rome has a city tax for anyone staying in the city, and we didn’t realise this wasn’t included in our booking fee and had to pay this when we arrived, so check this for anywhere you book in central Rome!
