Why Trastevere is the place to be in Rome
In a city with so much history, you can’t avoid being a classic tourist in Rome. But it’s also nice to put the camera down and immerse yourself in some everyday, Roman life. Having only spent a few days there, I’m no expert on the city by any means, but Trastevere was a great place to experience this for me!
It’s the 13th rione in the city and is quite a young working class & studenty area. As with most of Rome it’s still got loads of history and plenty to see as you wander around its pretty cobbled streets and piazzas. But it’s also got a real buzz about it and there are loads of cool cafes, shops, bars and clubs, so it’s a great place to head for a fun eve/night out.
One place that sums of the nature of the place is a quirkey little book shop where you can enjoy a shooter (main pic) from a chocolate cup – Cioccolata e Vino. There’s a bit of a queue for the shots but it’s a great atmosphere and dead fun. But even if you don’t fancy this especially, head there as it’s on a street full of fun and reasonably priced bars.
If you’re on a budget Trastevere is also great as most of the restaurants and bars are quite cheap. I’d particularly recommend San Calisto bar where you can grab a large beer for a couple of euros and enjoy live music most evenings.
Restaurant-wise, we ate at Le Mani which was DELICIOUS, but more on the pricey side (it was my birthday, I wanted a treat!) Read my review on it here.
