Laganas – cheap, tacky, but fun!

the nibbling nomad Laganas, ZanteLaganas is the biggest town in Zante and to be honest if you’re looking for culture, you won’t find it here. It’s party party party! It has a bit of a Magaluf type vibe (not that I’ve actually been there, just what I’d imagine) – there are a lot of drunk British teenagers out to get laid. It’s a bit trashy.

BUT you can still have a great time and you can still find the traditional Greek elements if you want to.

Personally I’m more than happy to hit the bars and with so many on the main strip, you can get some real bargains with everyone competing for you to come in. I think our best was two double vodka redbulls and two jagerbombs for €5! the nibbling nomad LaganasWe had some really fun, boozy nights, although I wouldn’t recommend bothering with any of the clubs, they’re really expensive to get in and you’re not gonna get Amnesia type standards! There are so many bars that you don’t really need to bother.

You have got your standard drunk food kebab houses, but there are also loads of tavernas where you can get some lush traditional Greek food – you just might have to accept that your view from the table might be the strip club over the road…

And for the day time, Laganas beach (main pic) really is lovely. It’s a really, really long stretch of golden sand with calm, warm and crystal clear waters. The first half of the beach that you come to is a bit touristy and packed, but if your head’s pounding from the night before you can get some peace and quiet at the far end where sunbeds and brolleys aren’t allowed to protect the turtle nesting habitat. (Sadly we didn’t see any turtles – all we got was a close shave with an enormous jelly!)

Laganas is also really commercial, which can be irritating being pestered as you walk down the strip, but it means there are loads of boat trips so you can escape the madness if you want.

I’d recommend taking a trip to St Nicholas Beach which is gorgeous and has a big bonus of watersports!

Basically if you’re happy to accept a bit of tackiness, you’ll love Laganas. You can still find Greek tradition with delicious food and Greek nights in the tavernas off the main strip – and you can also have a messy night out and sooth your hangover on a beautiful beach the next day! Sure there are nicer places in Greece you can visit, but for the pricetag it’s all good!
